A spectacular golf course
Ranked as the fourth best course in the world, Royal County Down Golf Club nestles at the feet of the majestic Mountains of Mourne and is an exhilarating location for a classic links golf course. The layout presents an unique test of golfing ability – the sand dunes are rugged but beautifully clad in purple heather and yellow gorse, the fairways are naturally undulating and shaped by the hands of time. The greens are small and full of wicked borrows.
The course has a level of eccentricity; there are still a number of blind drives and the famous ‘bearded’ bunkers are fringed with coarse grass, heather and red fescue which gathers the ball with alarming regularity, but this simply adds to the charm. It’s a mystery that this fantastic course has never hosted an Open Championship.
Royal County Down is a big, brawny spectacular golf course – it is a golf course that will try to dominate you and intimidate you – and it will likely succeed! From an architectural point of view the course is quite magnificent. While it is a true test of golfing prowess there are few courses with such majesty anywhere in the world.
